Sachin Tried to Stop Him: Why Kohli Ignored All Advice and Quit Test Cricket

Virat Kohli, one of the most iconic figures in modern cricket, has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable 14-year career in the longest format of the game. The 36-year-old announced via a heartfelt Instagram post, expressing gratitude for the journey and the lessons learned. “Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life,” he wrote. He concluded with the poignant sign-off: “#269, signing off,” referencing his Test cap number.

Kohli’s Test career began in June 2011 against the West Indies in Kingston. Over the years, he became a mainstay in the Indian batting lineup, known for his aggressive style and consistency. In 123 Test matches, he amassed 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. Notably, he scored nine centuries against Australia, accumulating 2,232 runs against them, showcasing his prowess against top-tier opposition.

As captain, Kohli led India in 68 Tests from 2014 to 2022, securing 40 victories, the most by any Indian Test captain. Under his leadership, India achieved historic series wins, including their first-ever Test series victory in Australia during the 2018-19 tour. He also guided the team to the finals of the World Test Championship in both 2021 and 2023, underscoring his impact on Indian cricket’s success in the format.

Kohli’s decision to retire comes shortly after Rohit Sharma’s announcement to step away from Test cricket, signaling a significant transition period for the Indian team. Despite the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) urging him to continue, especially with the upcoming five-match Test series in England starting June 20, Kohli remained resolute in his decision. Reports suggest that he had been contemplating retirement since India’s loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

Throughout his career, Kohli was known for setting high standards, both in terms of fitness and performance. His aggressive approach and commitment to excellence inspired a generation of cricketers. While he had once set a personal goal of reaching 10,000 Test runs, he retires just shy of that milestone, a testament to his focus on the team’s needs over individual accolades.

Kohli’s retirement marks the end of an era for Indian cricket. His contributions have been instrumental in shaping the team’s identity and success in the modern era. As he steps away from Test cricket, his legacy as one of India’s greatest cricketers is firmly cemented.
