The opening weekend of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 delivered a lot of exhilarating cricket, with record-breaking performances and entertaining moments. Here are some highlights from the weekend!
- Record Breaking spell by Jofra Archer:
Jofra Archer, created a record, one he would like to forget! In the high-scoring match against SRH, Rajasthan Royals’ pacer conceded 76 runs in his four-over spell, setting a new record for the most expensive bowling figures in IPL history.
- Ishan Kishan’s Century:
Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a mammoth total of 286 for 6, the second-highest in IPL history thanks to Ishan Kishan’s explosive 106 off 47 balls*.
- 13-Year-Old Prodigy Debuts:
The Rajasthan Royals introduced the youngest player in IPL history, 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
- Virat Kohli Spearheads Chase Against the Defending Champions:
The tournament kicked off at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, where the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faced the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who were restricted to 174-8. In response, RCB’s chase was anchored by skipper Virat Kohli, who remained unbeaten on 59 and Phil Salt’s brisk 56, which set the foundation for a comfortable seven-wicket victory, in just 16.2 overs.
- Noor Ahmed and Debutant Vignesh Puthur Spin Magic In A Close Encounter:
Chennai witnessed a thrilling encounter between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI). Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad claimed 4-18 and restricted MI to 155-9. Despite being on the losing side, MI’s Debutant Vignesh Puthur impressed with his left-arm wrist spin claiming 3-32.
- Ruturaj And Rachin Lead The Way:
Chennai’s chase was anchored by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored a composed 53 well supported by Rachin Ravindra with an unbeaten 65, ensuring a four-wicket victory for CSK.
- Ro Ne Rolaya:
When Rohit Sharma flicked the delivery straight to Shivam Dube, he entered his name in the dubious record of maximum ducks – 18 in IPL, one which he jointly holds with Glenn Maxwell.
- The Dance Of The Kings Leads To Better Footwork:
Earlier during the opening ceremony King Khan, SRK and King Kohli danced together and set the ground on fire!! RCB coach credited this for Kohli’s improved footwork!
- Vignesh Puthur Gets a Pat Of Approval From Dhoni:
MI might have lost the match, but their find from Kerala, Spinner Vignesh Puthur had a dream debut against CSK taking 3 wickets. To add to his moment, he received a pat from Dhoni himself leaving him star struck!
- Controversies:
The season has just started and we have our first few controversies of the season. From Harbhajan making racist remarks against Jofra Archer to fans criticising BCCI for not admitting security breach and instead praising a fan who crossed all the on ground security to meet Kohli on the field to CSK bowlers being accused of ball tampering!
